How to stay super motivated during your course creation journey

Keeping your motivation high during your course creation journey is a one of the essential factors of your success. How do you get to the finish line?

We’ve all been there: that moment when the first enthusiasm and excitement for a new project suddenly fades and we start postponing and finding excuses instead of doing the work. The more we postpone, the less important that project seems to become and before we know it, the project ends up in the pit of ideas that will forever stay ideas.

And course creation, because it’s a real project with different stages and all, is perfect for this pit. Many people start and never finish.

My opinion

As a course creator myself and a course creation coach, I have an opinion about this.

Firstly, I wish the marketing around course creation would not sell it as a quick way to make money. Yes, it’s quick if it’s the tenth course you create and you already have an eager audience, but nobody has that when they start off. It takes a while to learn everything and to find your eager tribe.

Secondly, even though it’s frustrating when I see this happen, it also gives opportunities for the ones that make it to the finish line. If everyone could just create a unique and valuable course easily, then it probably wouldn’t be unique and valuable anymore. The fact that you really believed in it, stuck with it and kept going when things got rough, means that it has potential. You may be onto something here. You have managed to create a great product and service for your business. You did it, where others failed.

What can you do to keep going?

Knowing that the monster of procrastination and doubt will inevitably creep up, what can you do to stay on track and slay that monster?

  1. Choose a course topic you totally love. One that you can talk endlessly about and that lights you up just thinking about it. You may have to work with that topic for years to come and help people master it, so don’t you dare choose something because your friend or your colleague (or your mother) think it’s kinda cool.

  2. Know your goal. See, dream, feel, smell what it will be like when you have a successful course running. And not so much the financial results or the traveling you want to do, but the business you want to run. Do you want to work one on one with people, do you like to give successful masterclasses, do you enjoy making landing pages or become a content creator on social media. And how will it help others?

  3. Learn how to manage and simplify complex projects (that’s part of my program). The main way to do this is break it up in phases, then in the bigger tasks and then in small steps.

  4. Become obsessed.

  5. Become obsessed.

  6. Become obsessed.

And you may want to find one or two people you can brainstorm ideas with and ask them to hold you accountable. But the main thing is to understand that this is not a regular job and nobody will tell you exactly what to do or when. Or what the end result will be. So the motivation will have to come from a source within you.

Some magic might help

Perhaps you’re not that obsessed yet and you have no idea where that source of motivation is located. You just want an online course.

Then I have a witchy tip for you (maybe you think that’s crazy, but if it works, it works): get a big candle, light it in the morning and put it somewhere where you can see it. Leave it on all day and think about how much you want that course, and every time you look at the flame, say to yourself ‘I’m an online course creator, no matter what’.

And the next day you start with the first small task (for instance: brainstorm ideas) and every day you do one thing that will bring you closer to your goal, big or small. And at a certain point you’ll see how that flame has started burning inside of you and it will keep you going until you succeed.
